Black Wealth Crawl Launches in Indianapolis With a Mission to Build, Connect and Invest

The 10-day initiative is putting a spotlight on Black-owned businesses while creating new opportunities for connection, collaboration and community wealth.

Indianapolis is continuing to find new ways to bring business owners, community leaders and residents together—and the Black Wealth Crawl is putting economic empowerment at the center of that conversation.

The Black Wealth Crawl officially kicked off on Friday, August 28, with an opening celebration at the Indy Black Chamber of Commerce, located at 2126 N. Meridian Street. The gathering introduced the community to a 10-day initiative centered around one clear mission: celebrate Black businesses, build Black wealth and strengthen the Indianapolis community.

But this is more than a series of events.

The Black Wealth Crawl is designed to encourage Indianapolis residents to intentionally discover, support and spend with Black-owned businesses throughout the city.

Turning Support Into Economic Impact

Supporting a local business has an impact that reaches far beyond a single purchase.

When residents spend money with independently owned businesses, those dollars can help entrepreneurs hire employees, invest in equipment, expand their operations and create additional opportunities within their neighborhoods.

The Black Wealth Crawl creates a reason for people to explore businesses they may not have known existed while also giving business owners another platform to introduce themselves to the greater Indianapolis community.

That visibility matters.

For many small businesses, one new customer can turn into a repeat customer. One introduction can turn into a partnership. One conversation can lead to a contract, collaboration or opportunity that continues long after the crawl ends.

Creating Connections, Not Just Customers

The opening celebration also highlighted another important part of building a strong business community: relationships.

Business owners, professionals, community organizations and supporters were able to come together, network and learn more about the businesses participating in the Black Wealth Crawl.

That type of connection creates an ecosystem where entrepreneurs aren’t operating alone.

Instead of simply asking people to “support local,” the Black Wealth Crawl is creating an organized opportunity for the community to meet the people behind the businesses, understand their stories and intentionally put dollars back into Indianapolis-based companies.

The initiative also brings together organizations including the Indy Black Chamber of Commerce, Indy Chamber and the City of Indianapolis, helping connect entrepreneurship with larger conversations about economic development throughout the city.

Building Something That Can Last

The greatest impact of the Black Wealth Crawl may come after the official 10 days are over.

Events like this can introduce people to a new restaurant they continue visiting, a clothing brand they continue purchasing from, a service provider they eventually hire or an entrepreneur they later collaborate with.

That is how an event becomes a movement.

It starts with awareness, but the long-term goal is continued support.

Indianapolis has no shortage of talented entrepreneurs, creatives and locally owned businesses. Initiatives such as the Black Wealth Crawl provide another opportunity to make sure those businesses are seen, connected and supported.

The message coming out of the opening celebration was simple: community wealth is something the community can participate in building.

For the next 10 days, Indianapolis residents have an opportunity to explore participating Black-owned businesses, make new connections and become more intentional about where they spend their dollars.

The inaugural Black Wealth Crawl will conclude with a Closeout Celebration on September 7 at 1000 Words Gallery, 3328 E. 10th Street in Indianapolis.

For Indy, this isn’t only about shopping.

It’s about ownership, relationships, opportunity and building an Indianapolis economy where more local businesses have the chance to grow.
