The Check-In with 4200Kory at Ujamaa Community Bookstore felt like a real example of what being Black-tastic looks like in practice. 4200Kory didn’t just show up to perform — he showed up to gather people. Sharing his music live, including songs from his Cobra Son album and the Naptown anthem “Well Raised,” he helped turn a Black-owned bookstore into a space for connection.
of the ci4200Kory is from the Eastside of Indianapolis, but always on the right side of the people, and that came through clearly. The Check-In felt less like a show and more like an invitation. Tiny Desk–style, up close, and intentional.
He led with presence, humility, and care — grounded in family, service, and collaboration — and you could feel that energy in the room. Not just through the music, but in how everyone was welcomed.

Ujamaa Community Bookstore really set the tone. A Black-owned neighborhood space with intention behind it. Folks browsed the shelves, talked, lingered, and settled in. It didn’t feel rushed. It felt safe. It felt sacred.
What stood out most for us was the balance between documenting and actually being there. We were working — capturing moments, paying attention — but we could still fully experience it. That doesn’t happen often.
Spaces rooted in care make it easier to put the phone down and trust that the moment matters, even if it isn’t fully recorded. People still grabbed a clip or two — not out of habit, but out of love. Little pieces of joy, saved for later.
The Check-In also showed what collaboration across the city can look like. An artist from the Eastside brought his work to the Westside and was met with real support. That kind of movement matters. It’s how silos break. It’s how community grows.
If anything, it reminded us how much comfort matters in small venues. A little more seating, some snacks, something to drink — small things that help people relax and stay awhile. Not extra, just easy.
At the end of the day,
The Check-In was a reminder of why gathering matters. Showing up to spaces like this isn’t just about supporting an artist — it’s about supporting each other. In a chaotic world, moments like these create peace, togetherness, and unity without asking anyone to be the same. Just present. And that’s powerful.
